P-38J Lightning Pudgy as flown by Thomas McGuire Super Elite 1/32
SKU: AP38PUTS
The P-38 Lightning is a fighter aircraft used by the Americans in World War II. The aircraft has an identifiable forward-mounted engine with a single central nacelle containing the pilot and armament. The P-38 was used in distinct missions, which include photo reconnaissance missions, dive bombing, level bombing, ground strafing and extensively as a long-range escort fighter aircraft. Maj. Thomas McGuire was the second highest scoring ace of all time who flew the P-38 Lightning nicknamed "Pudgy". McGuire made 38 kills during his flight, a score that was only two behind Dick Bong, who was the all-time Ace of Aces. McGuire had shot down seven Japanese Zeroes single-handedly during his combat mission on Christmas day of the year 1944. On January 7, 1945, McGuire led a group of four P-38s over a Japanese-held airstrip in the Philippines. During this mission, McGuire's aircraft formation have scattered when an enemy aircraft attacked one of his P-38s'. The pilot quickly radioed for assistance, and McGuire immediately responded for rescue. McGuire's plane crashed due to combat in low altitude. He died while saving a friend's life, and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. ******************************************************************* Models with SKU numbers ending in "R" are hand crafted of resin material and those ending in "P" are plastic (EXCEPTION: ALL MODELS WITH A HYPHENATED SKU, LIKE AM231-BR, ARE MAHOGANY).
